Rae Lynne Colvin Burgess
( December 27, 1958 - March 13, 2013 )
Rae Lynne Colvin Burgess passed away quietly on March 13, 2013 at the Bellevue Medical Center after one of the shortest battles with cancer most people have ever seen. From her diagnosis to her passing was three hours short of fifteen days. Rae was born in Rapid City, SD on December 27, 1958 to Mary and Ray Colvin. She graduated from Rapid City Central High School, class of 1977, where she was a booster, band member, and over-all good student. She held a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Chadron State College and was proudly three classes short of a second Bachelors in Library Science. As is typical of Air Force wives, she had many jobs throughout her career. These included director of the Ramstein USO, an early childhood development counselor at the Vogelweh Child Development Center, and a Library Technician at the base libraries at Eglin AFB, Ramstein AB, and Offutt AFB. She was married to David Burgess (currently of Bellevue, NE) in Basel, Switzerland on July 6, 1982. Survivors include her husband, David; son, Kevin; step-daughter, Amber; brothers, Dan and Sam; and best friend, Joyce; as well as numerous cousins, second cousins, uncles, aunts, and other close family. She was preceded in death by her parents. Per Rae's request, there will be no traditional visitation or funeral. A Remembrance Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 13 at Kirk Funeral Home Chapel in Rapid City. If you do not have your own Mickey Mouse ears, sets will be available at the service: "she did love her Mouse." Be ready to share, as the Ceremony is all about her memories. Rae's final resting place will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A Memorial Fund to an appropriate cause is being established in lieu of flowers. Rae was a force of nature- her gentle approach to the people that needed her, combined with an encyclopedic knowledge of literature, garnered her a cult following in every job she ever held. She will be sorely missed.
