RAPID CITY - Investigators Tuesday were still trying to piece together why a young driver lost control of a small pickup on North Fifth Street, striking and fatally injuring a Rapid City woman.
Anna Spry, 43, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 2 p.m. Monday at the Rapid Creek bridge near Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Pete Valdez, 15, of Rapid City was at the wheel of a 1986 Dodge Ram that jumped a curb and struck the woman.
The pickup struck the bridge, then came to rest on the bank of the creek.
Valdez and passengers Cody Raterman, 16, Darren Kihega, 15, and Spencer Wilcox, 16, were treated and released at Rapid City Regional Hospital. A fourth passenger in the pickup, Colin Lemmon, 15, remained listed in fair condition at the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Capt. Ed Hofkamp of the Rapid City Police Department said investigators were trying to determine the speed of the pickup when the crash occurred.
He said the driver and one passenger were in the cab, and the remaining three were in the rear cargo area of the compact truck. Hofkamp said charges are pending after the investigation, which has officers stretched because Monday's death is the sixth fatal incident within city limits since late December.
"It's unusual for us to have this many (investigations) going at the same time," he said. "It means a lot of hard work and long hours."
Hofkamp said that the department long has made traffic enforcement a priority, but plans are being made to step up patrols and concentrated sweeps to stem aggressive driving.
