PATRICK BAUMGARTNER

RAPID CITY - Patrick Morris Baumgartner, born June 14, 1959, died November 16, 1998, at his home after a courageous two year battle with a rare kidney cancer.  As a young boy, he lived with his family on a ranch near Rockerville.  He was a 1977 graduate from Central High School.  After high school, he attended a diesel mechanics school where he won an award for his work.  He worked as a diesel mechanic for 10 years.  From 1977 to 1988, Patrick was an active member of the Pennington County Search and Rescue.  He married Teresa Beatty in Corvallis, Oregon.  The couple lived in Rapid City until, in February of 1988, Patrick fulfilled a dream and became a South Dakota Highway patrolman.  Initially stationed in Sioux Falls for 7 years, he was awarded the 1992 Trooper of the Year by the Morning Optimist Club.  In 1996, he was transferred to Rapid City where he was a well-respected member of his peer group.  Patrick thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors especially scuba diving, hiking and fishing.  One of the greatest pleasures of his life was his affiliation with the South Dakota Highway Patrol.  Patrick’s greatest pleasure was the time he spent with his wife and two sons.  Patrick’s quiet strength and enormous heart will be missed by everyone he touched: his family, his friend and his fellow workers.
